Ortho-Phthalates, often referred to as phthalates (or esters of ortho-phthalic acid), are a group of chemical compounds that have been utilized throughout many industries. In the cosmetic industry, phthalates are used in nail polishes and hairsprays, and/or as a solvent in fragrances. Beginning January 1, 2025, individual states of the United States will start restricting the distribution of cosmetic products containing ortho-phthalates in all cosmetic products intermittently.
At Oribe Hair Care, Diethyl Phthalate* (DEP) was previously used in a small amount in one of our discontinued fragrance oils. Having said so, we have proactively updated and eliminated the presence of Diethyl Phthalate (DEP) from all our affected product formulations. Starting 2025, all our newly manufactured products will be phthalate free.
*US FDA states DEP does not pose known risks for human health as it is currently used in cosmetics and fragrances. Quoted from US FDA’s website: “Fragrance in Cosmetics”.
